While many others speculate about the viability of universal basic income, Mayor Michael Tubbs of Stockton, Calif., is putting it to the test. The city began distributing $500 a month to 125 residents in February 2019. So far, residents have spent most of their new income on food. Other categories included: clothing, utilities, gas, and auto repairs. While Mayor Tubbs came in without an opinion on UBI. He is now “much more resolute in this idea.” UBI may seem like an audacious idea, but that’s exactly what we need now.
