Are your professional accomplishments actually preventing you from taking your business to the next level?
Salim Ismail, the best-selling author of Exponential Organizations and founder of OpenExo and EXO Works, says one of the ironies of working in a time of exponential change is that your past successes may be a liability. During a talk at the Boma Germany Summit, Ismail said the experts in a legacy industry are often blind to innovations that need to happen.
“When you have exponential growth, the experts in that industry absolutely cannot see it. They are not able to see it, and we’ve witnessed this phenomenon in domain after domain,” he said.
“The skillset needed to build an exponential organization is completely different than the skillset in the legacy business. And the more experience you have in the legacy business, the worse you will be in the ExO. Just by definition. Experience today is actually a massive barrier to innovation.”
